Same Rails. A Different Tomorrow

📜 ACI Railway Archives — File No. 012

We have absolutely no explanation for this one.

Another fragment has been recovered from the journals of the Mysterious Railway Engineer.

The location appears to be somewhere in the American West.

The date is considerably less helpful.

18:03 — Arrived in a frontier town.

18:05 — A steam locomotive came thundering through the station, pushing a most peculiar mechanical carriage ahead of it.

18:15 — Extraordinary flashes of light and a tremendous noise.

18:16 — The carriage vanished before my eyes.

18:17 — Railwaymen appeared thoroughly bewildered.

18:21 — I fear I have witnessed the future.

Arthur's final note reads:

Different places.

The same railway.

Time is more flexible than we imagine.

We initially assumed he'd simply encountered an early American motor car.

Then we found the photograph.

We're no longer making that assumption.

For one thing, the locomotive appears to have been travelling at a rather alarming speed.

For another, the mechanical carriage seems to have disappeared while the locomotive continued along the line.

We are not entirely sure how to explain either observation.

There is also a handwritten annotation on the accompanying railway map:

“Same rails. Different time?”

Followed by what appears to be a second attempt:

“time?”

Whatever happened at Hill Valley that evening, Arthur apparently decided not to investigate further.

Which, considering his previous encounter with a certain blue box, demonstrates an unusual amount of common sense. 👀

Although we can't help wondering whether Arthur recognised something about that peculiar mechanical carriage that the rest of the railwaymen did not.

🚂 More fragments from the ACI Railway Archives will be released as we recover them.

Assuming, of course, that we recover them in the correct century.

Archivist's Note

The photograph accompanying this fragment remains unexplained.

Although the locomotive and station appear consistent with the late nineteenth century, the mechanical carriage does not.

Of particular concern are the electrical discharges visible around the vehicle and Arthur's repeated reference to time.

We have considered consulting a specialist.

Unfortunately, we are not entirely certain which century the specialist should come from.

Archive status: Unresolved — chronological inconsistencies identified.
